A New Experience
With the attempt to experience a more collaborative design process, I registered for then Hackathon hosted by Cornell App Dev. After teaming with peers with diverse backgrounds, we had a thorough discussion on everyone’s project ideas. we finally decided on parking, a track that is close to our life and should be improved on.
“Cornell’s campus has a total of 4,040 parking stalls for students and the average student/stall ratio is nearly 5.7
The Angry Drivers
Unlike the ideal world, the format of the hackathon doesn’t really allow for carefully identifying the people problem. Nonetheless, I conducted 4 qualitative user interviews with people who drive around on campus and here are some findings:
😠
They have difficulties finding parking lots on campus.
💢
They often encounter spots that are restricted for.
🤬
The detailed info of every parking lot is not unified (price, open time...).
Current Apps
During the interviews, users mentioned two (amazing) apps they mainly use during their parking process: Google Maps and Park Mobile
✅ Accurate Navigation
❌ Lack of detailed info
✅ Reserve ahead; Easy pay
❌ Not all parking lots included
GOAL
Map View
Find nearby parking lot, search for parking lot near your destination.
Parking List
A complete list of parking lots with basic
info needed, can be switched to liked only.
Information Page
Users can see the name, number, price, open hours, and location of the parking lot. They can also leave and read real comments on the parking space.
Looking Back...
Parky was designed under a tight time constraint of merely more than a week. If I had time, I would conduct a more thorough user research, interviewing groups of users not limiting to the scope my friends.

Unlike other case studies, Parky is a project that I ideated every detail from scratch. I enjoyed the creative freedom I own and was satisfied with the implementation of the MVP.
